On August 25-26, hundreds of players convened at the world famous SC Village Paintball Park in Corona, California, for the Decay of Nations scenario game. SC Village built a reputation for themselves in the '80s and early '90s as the go-to field for big-game and scenario productions, and with Decay of Nations turning out one of the biggest crowds in West Coast scenario production history, it appears they haven't lost their touch.
Who are they? Dennis Bukowski and Giovanni D'Egidio have been the two driving forces behind three of the most successful paintball parks in the country: SC Village, Hollywood Sports, and Giant Paintball. Credited as among the inventors of speedball, the duo also were among the pioneers that helped bring scenario/big-game productions to the attention of the West Coast players. All of their experience and resources were definitely shown here at the Nations game.
The basic premise behind the game was simple, taking a page out of modern-day history with a little embellishment. The United States invades Iraq as fighting in the Middle East reaches a fever pitch. Because of the war effort, the U.S. has exhausted all of its reserves and is completely broke. Deeply in debt, the U.S. opens its borders to Canada and Mexico, effectively becoming one nation, renamed the UNA (United North America). Together, they are placed into war against three other factions: the Ekron Company, which now controls all of the oil in the Middle East; North Korea, with its vast nuclear capabilities; and the Catholic Church, which has used its large fiscal reserve to fund its own military that then replaces the UN.
Four top-flight scenario generals were brought in to command each of the four factions. These men were:
1) Scott Barber
2) Mario Caycedo
3) The entire staff of 5150 and 702 Recon
4) Paintball Legend Greg Hastings
At their disposal would be hundreds of players, a vast array of vehicles and two days of play on some of the best themed fields in the world.
The biggest star of the event, however, was the prize package, as a previously unheard-of amount of $100,000 in prizes was given out in the form of rewards to teams, players, contests and grand prizes. Everything from pods to Angel A1s were given out to eager scenario players, who unlike tournament players, almost never have opportunities to win anything at all.
In the end, it was the Catholic Church team that came out on top, securing 1st-place points and the overall victory, but players from all sectors agreed that this event was one of the best in recent memory and will not be forgotten.
